I literally got dragged kicking and screaming by my GF to see Mamma Mia at one of those discount 2nd run movie theaters last night. I wanted to find something redeeming in Mamma Mia, I really did. Instead I sat there eyes wide open, horrified at what was taking place before my eyes on screen. I tried to dose off, but Mamma Mia being a musical was simply too grating to shut out. At moments I felt as if I was a prisoner of war being subjected to cruel and unusual punishment in the form of psychological torture. You need to surprise the visitor and one of the ways to do this is use reverse psychology. The more you say you don’t want the visitor to do something the more curious they become and want to do what your saying.

How to apply reverse psychology to your marketing campaign?

Lets say you are an SEO firm. Company fees are one of my biggest pet peeves. Fees are a company’s back door way to increase earnings by screwing their customers. Companies surprise the customer with charges that unless you read the fine print didn’t know existed or how much those charges would be. Take for example my T-Mobile cell phone bill this month. I called customer service regarding my $45 charge in text messaging. Even the customer service women at T-Mobile didn’t know what T-Mobile charged per text, she thought it was $0.15. I said T-Mobile charged me $0.20, and then she remembered that T-Mobile did recently increase the overage charge for text messaging to $0.20. My question is I own a Blackberry and pay for the “data package” and have 500 text messages included in my plan why the f*** does T-Mobile charge extra to text? Shouldn’t I have unlimited text? Why is text considered a separate entity from data?

Another pet peeve of mine… ATM Charges

The bank should be paying me for putting money into their depository. Banks shouldn’t be trying to take it away. Banks across the country are raising ATM fees because they so horribly mismanaged your money by loaning it out to people that couldn’t pay it back that they need to raise even more money. Banks want to screw you even more so they can stay afloat. Citibank, Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo are all starting to charge non-customers as much as $3 per transaction to use their ATM machines. On top of the fee the other bank charges me my bank adds an additional $2.00 charge. I sometimes pay as much as $5.00 to take money out of my bank account.

I think people need to get more upset about fees all they are is a sneaky way to raise revenue for companies with broken business models and shrinking revenues.

"Why Believe in God? Just be good for goodness' sake" is a new ad campaign will appear in Washington D.C. buses starting next week and run through December. The The American Humanist Association is responsible for this ad campaign. One of the goals of the humanist association according to their web site is to "develop and advance humanist thought and action." According to Wikipedia humanism is defined as "a broad category of ethical philosophies that affirm the dignity and worth of all people, based on the ability to determine right and wrong by appealing to universal human qualities, particularly rationality. It is generally compatible with atheism and agnosticism but doesn't require either of these."

As a marketer when I saw a picture of this ad on a Washington D.C. bus I was turned off by it. The goal of a marketer is to make a compelling case why someone should agree or disagree with your message. It's not to manipulate and/or belittle what they believe in. That's why I'm so disgusted by religious preachers asking for money on TV (manipulative), or the charities that show the faces of poverty while depressing music plays in the background (manipulative). We shouldn't be belittled or shamed into making important decisions. People should always have the freedom to believe what they want. Freedom of speech is also about freedom of thought.

Crude closes at $66 a Barrel a 16-month Low. Why is Gas at the Pump Still High?

I see the price per barrel of oil dropping daily yet the price at the pump seems to stay the same. Every time I fill up my car I ask myself what's up with gas prices not going down? In downtown Seattle gas is still going for $3.53 at the 76 Station on 351 Broad St N & Denny Way and $3.39 at the Shell on 1500 Broadway Ave E & E Pike St. Why does it take so long for the gas price to drop yet if there's a hurricane developing in the gulf the price at the pump jumps overnight?

I'm been doing some research that surprisinglyis contradicting my perception regarding the correlation between prices at the pump and price per barrel. In Seattle since we have such a high tax on fuel the numbers might be skewed so they don't accurately reflect a decline in gas prices at the pump. Here's a list of all US States and total taxes on gas http://www.seattlegasprices.com/tax_info.aspx. Washington State is one of the highest, check out your state's total taxes on fuel. The price you pay at the pump, is based on the projected supply and demand months out.

The WTRG.com http://www.wtrg.com/daily/oilandgasspot.html has a very useful graph that maps the relationship of crude vs. gas prices. This number of course will vary by region. There seems to be a direct correlation between price per barrel and price at the pump even though sometimes it feels otherwise. Another surprising fact about oil companies I discovered is that after taxes the big oil companies with their so called "windfall profits" only keep a fraction of their initial profit. http://seekingalpha.com/article/63131-exxon-s-2007-tax-bill-30-billion For example in 2006 Exxon Mobile had $39.5 billion in profits, but had a tax bill of 28 billion. Leaving a 2006 profit of 11.5 billion. Walmart to give you a comparison posted a profit of 11.23 billion http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500/snapshots/1551.html. In 2007 Exxon Mobil had a profit of 40.6 billion and a total tax bill of 30 billion. Total profits for 2007 were 10.6.

Don’t get me wrong 11.5 and 10.6 billion is a ton of money, but perception of a totally corrupt oil market doesn’t always equal reality. I withhold judgment at this point… where there’s billions of dollars there’s got to be some corruption and/or manipulation. There’s no don’t that the market/price for crude oil is controlled just look at OPEC who called an emergency meeting this past Friday spooked by the 50% decline in the price per barrel from $147. The 13-nation group might cut production by millions of barrels in order to get a price spike. Iran is looking for a price of $100 a barrel, and Venezuela at $80-$90 (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5iTKFqY44EEha_Fb9CRDMjU692BWgD93VLFI00).” They have to be careful though not to further fan the flames of a global recession with the help of high energy prices. Doing this will decrease demand even further thus lowering the price per barrel even more.

It’s interesting to note how some people get into blogging. One particular person I know of got into it just by clicking links to blog posts on Twitter. Some Twitter members link to blogs that are so well done and the followers can’t help but be envious and be encouraged to blog. Is it safe to assume that most of the people on twitter are bloggers? Not really. Some are simply there to connect with relatives abroad, find out who’s friends with who and to promote their blogs. The fun part is getting followers. Yes, this is fun for me, but maybe not to some. See, most people feel compelled to follow you when you follow them first, and doing that over and over with really interesting people can be gratifying.

How do you fast track interaction on your blog through Twitter?

I’ve seen it done time and time again, and those who use their Twitter space wisely can enjoy the benefits of getting more blog subscribers, and more comments. I view each twit as bait; a colorful lure that invites people to explore more, ask more and follow more. Do you have a strong opinion about the economic crisis or the political standing of a presidential candidate? Simply telling your community that you have posted your thoughts about a hot topic on your blog will make them come running to read.

Comments can be ego fodder to some, and blog boost to some. It doesn’t matter whether you are a seasoned blogger or a new one, the feeling that comes after you see someone comment on a post is indescribable. The thing is, comments mean interaction. It also increases the relevance of a post. Comments mean that people have read your post and would like to put in their two cents. Remember that Twitter communities are expanding and your friends could be following the friends of the people in your community. Everyone’s getting to know everyone else, and because there is a character limit to every twit, your first words must be interesting enough for people to get curious and follow the link provided. If they disagree too strongly to your views, they won’t be able to expound more about why they disagree via Twitter so they go to your blog to reply there.

There are spammers on twitter, like everywhere else, but the beauty of it is that oen can simply delete a spammer from a list. You can spam all you want, but if you have no friends, no one will see it.

Building curiosity as well as community is the best thing about Twitter for me. There’s just so much wit that you can inject in one or two sentences, but those who manage to keep people rapt and tuned in to their twits have the power to invite anyone to their blogs, affiliate programs and company sites. The representatives of companies can even increase brand awareness by simply describing in frequent twits what’s so unique about their product. Again, the ability to avoid turning off spam-sensitive people comes into play. If you build a reputation of sending useful, non-spam information, or extremely entertaining one-liners, you could be the most popular Twitterati in your growing community.

I wrote about this issue on September 21st where the 3 CEOs that recklessly mismanages their companies yet somehow ended up walking away with millions of dollars. The CEO’s of the failed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be leaving with a $24 million severance package paid with our tax dollars. “$14.9 million for the former CEO of Freddie Mac and as much as $9.8 million for the former CEO of Fannie Mae. Robert Willumstad of AIG is leaving with a $7 million exit package. This is on top of the millions of dollars Mr. Mudd and Mr. Syron earned in 2007. "Daniel Mudd, the CEO of Fannie Mae, received $11.6 million in salary, stock and other compensation for 2007. You ideally want a keyword that gets over 200 combined hits a month according to WordTracker.com. Combined meaning all the keyword variations grouped together. For example, lets say you choose to make a Tickle Me Elmo niche store. If you type in “Tickle Me Elmo” you’ll notice several keyword variations in the same niche theme. Add these up and see if they total 200. “Tickle me elmo 179,” “tickle me elmo extreme 4,” “tickle me elmo surprise 4.” WordTracker.com keyword count is always low, so don’t worry about the 200 total search rule, there are more searches going on that that for your chosen niche keyword.

Are Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs a Fire Risk?

Update August 06 2008: Read comment section for response to this blog post. Apparently brown or melting plastic (see pictures) is relatively normal. I will definitely do more research into this.

If you’re like me you’ve already replaced most of the bulbs in your home with compact fluorescent bulbs. By switching over from 60W + 100W incandescent I’ve seen noticeable savings on my energy bill. There has been something occurring that’s got me concerned, so much so that I may switch back from compact fluorescents to standard bulbs. The bulbs in question are the SKU #292-460 Model EDXO-14 120V 60Hz 14W .200A V # 42836 manufactured by Commercial Electric also doing business as DuraBright. These 14W bulbs last a maximum of about 6 months even though they claim they will last for several years. The real issue I have with these bulbs manufactured by Commercial Electric is when the burn out they literally burn out. When I have gone to replace the bulbs around where the glass connects to the plastic base there is brown charring (see pictures). The bulb seems to be short circuiting, over heating, and nearly catching on fire. This isn’t a one time occurrence either, on every failed bulb I can see varying degrees of brown burn marks. On one bulb (see pictures) you can see that there is actually melted plastic around the edge of the light bulb! I did some research on Consumer Electric and some of their bulbs have been recalled in the past, specifically the ‘32-watt, 3-way (40-75-150 watt output) compact fluorescent bulbs,” but they did not recall the 14 W model that I purchased. I would stay away from this brand as it poses as a fire risk. From now on I’m sticking with name brand companies instead of the fly by night China operations with limited quality control. (Update: TCP, Inc. the company that manufacturers these bulbs is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio.)

Suze Orman is the financial guru for the rest of us. She gives very easy to understand; almost dumb down, financial information that many of us don’t seem to understand looking at the current credit crisis. In April I took a vacation to Las Vegas. My airline of choice was Southwest. I was able to get the incredibly low fare of $80 each way through a special promotion called “Get Away Fares.” Other airlines price based on what all the other airlines are doing, but Southwest seems to truly have “sale” fares. If you are flexible in the days and times you leave, Southwest can save you a bundle. I was running Windows 2000 on an old machine as long as I could until I bought a new computer that I specifically requested Windows XP to be loaded onto it. Those individuals who haven’t made the jump to Vista yet might not have to because in an expected 2010 release date Microsoft will introduce Windows 7. Microsoft’s Vista is only a year and a half old and already they’re talking about a new operating system. Rumor is Windows 7 will support multi touch screens. May be they’re just trying to garner some buzz stealing Apple’s marketing hype machine dominance.

According to the associated press the death toll has risen to 68,109. The destructive power of the earth quake was so devastating it’s hard to fully grasp without actually going there. I think these pictures give a pretty good indication. The photos were taking at a wedding.

Is the goal of red light cameras for safety or for scamming you out of money? Some say scam in the Las Angelas area based on new research done by the LA Times. See the May 19^th 2008 article here: http://www.latimes.com. “In Los Angeles, officials estimate that 80% of red light camera tickets go not to those running through intersections but to drivers making rolling right turns. The city of Los Angeles issued more than 30,000 photo tickets last year at 32 camera-equipped intersections. About 8 in 10 involved right turns, said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Matthew MacWillie, the program's co-coordinator.” Red light running violations in Los Angeles County aren’t cheep at $381. Rolling red light right hand turns still fetch a hefty $159 for what essentially is a legal turn. Since rolling turns are not a major safety concern in my opinion this suggests (not surprising) that cities motive for installing red light cameras has a lot to do with generating additional revenue and not necessarily about saving lives. I'd like to know your thoughts, please comment.
